Look at all that snow!

We arrived back home on January 16, 2011 to a foot of snow and -10 C. We have never seen so much snow before since we have lived here! Of course it took the rest of the day to warm up the house. Thank goodness for the propane heaters, especially the new one. It warmed up in here in no time. The snow and cold remained for a couple of days. Our water was froze but thanks to being prepared we had the water jugs full so we could at least drink and cook. Sea water was used for a couple of days to flush the toilets. George was able to get the water running two days later and we filled up the big jacuzzi tub in our bathroom (the only thing this tub is good for).

Winter Wonderland

We both had showers, and the water froze again. George got it going again on Friday, with the filter housing cracked and now changed. One does not know how much water is appreciated until you have to melt snow and use sea water.

A short life is in store for him!

The weather started warming up on Thursday, so I went out and built a snowman. Poor thing had a good short life as it almost gone now.

We were quite surprised to see that the grass is green, the snow drops are sprouting green tops and the daffodils are starting to come up.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Alberta. George worked at our Tru Hardware Store in Red Earth Creek and commuted back and forth from Peace River and I was able to spend quality time with Signe in Grande Prairie. We enjoyed our Christmas with family in Peace River. Mother Mary is well and is looking forward to coming in June for a visit. Her trip last year was cancelled unexpectedly. We do not miss the -30C temperature with wind chill. This was the temperature on January 14 and 15 when we left.

Rain, rain and more rain

It seems that the summer we had briefly is long gone and the continuous winter is here to stay. George was gone for three weeks, he had is quarterly check up and all is well. He was working in our TruHardware store in Red Earth and even went to the annual market in Winnipeg. He had not been at the market for 5 years so noticed quite a few changes.

The new day pass we charged this year was received well by some and not so well by others. The pass allows anchored boats to have the same privileges as those that stay at the dock. A few other marinas charge a day pass and have had the same mixed reaction. We are sorry that some people feel the way they do, but the day pass will stay for now.

Some canning was done while George was gone with 5 dozen blackberry jam, 2 dozen plum jam and few jars of relish. Zucchini was not producing this year. Carrots were prolific so almost 2 dozen jars were canned. All canning is done with a pressure canner and with the proper procedures. Tomatoes are now ripening slowly and a few jars of sauce were done.

We will see what the weather brings, but so far rain is always in the forecast. George is working on getting power on the docks and lights in the store. The house needs work this year and pressure washing is in progress. What a difference it makes.

September Fog instead of Fogust

After a long summer, it appears that the season has finally wound down. We had our first supper last night up at the house. It was our first supper at home since the beginning of June. We have had a lot of fun this summer and enjoyed seeing old friends and making new ones. We thank all the boaters that graced our dock this year. You made this summer very enjoyable for us. There are too many to name but everyone knows who they are!

I spent 10 days in Alberta and returned on Wednesday. Christine had to go back to University and she now set up in her own apartment. Melissa and Darren are doing well in Grande Prairie and Signe has grown and is becoming her own person now. What a joy!!

More September Fog

The bay was getting cleaned up at the end of August but has come to a standstill now. We will see what progresses as the fall continues. It is supposed to be cleaned up and the barge in the middle of the bay is to be gone at the end of September. We contacted some people to have this done and are supposed to give progress reports. We will see what happens. Hopefully by next summer the bay will be clean.

Season is winding down

It has been a busy couple of weeks, with quite a few boats and many meals. The weather had smartened up and we finally had some summer! The season is winding down now and Christine will be heading back to Alberta tomorrow via a road trip with mom. George will be a grass widower for a week until I return. We do not anticipate that he will be overly busy.

The grass has taken off again, and just as I was about to mow, the tractor died. It has no umph so grass mowing until it is fixed. Hopefully George will get to it. The big generator at the house quit last week and George had to make a flying trip to Campbell River to pick up another smaller one. The brushes and holders are on order for the big one. The new one under the trees is being worked on and there are a few issues with it but it will be going by next year. Hopefully we can have power on the docks then. The cost for the cable is more than what the generator is worth. It is $25.00 per foot for the cable so it will be a large expense.

Hopefully next year we can also obtain a dishwasher as I am very, very tired of doing dishes. It will save on water as well as it will use quite abit less. George figures we have served over 1000 meals this year already. That is alot of dishes!!

We have received many red shoes and quite afew people have worn red shoes. It is becoming quite popular and the pub his very red!! Also received quite afew burgies again this year.

Still Busy

THEY SURE ARE HUNGRY!

The last two weeks have still been busy. Of course there were a few days with only a few boats at the dock and a few anchored out. Many people have been enjoying the restaurant, with the deck being used to its full extent. Thank you sun!!

RED SHOE GALA

There were dolphins in the bay a few days ago. They were in a feeding frenzy and consequently most of the fish are gone. The salmon jumping by the dock are gone, or so it seems. We are convinced that the one we see jumping is the same one that has been there for three years, but we know that is not possible. It is like it is teasing us and saying "ha, ha, come and get me if you can". It would be nice to have a feed of fresh salmon.

YUM, YUM, CINNAMON BUNS AND BREAKY CROISSANT

Christine has caught huge crab in our trap at the end of the dock. She gave some to a couple of the boats that were not successful. George experimented and deep fried her one and it was delicious. The shell was softer so crackers were not needed. George likes to experiment with the deep fryer. He deep fried a burger the other day, batter and all. He says it was good but I have my suspicions. I wonder what he will try next. There have been bananas (good), Snicker bars (also good), hot dogs, battered fries. I wonder if strawberries would be good. Any suggestions??

FULL DOCK

The sun has decided to stick around for awhile (but it is drizzly today). The garden needed the heat and sun and has exploded in some areas. there are two rows of peas that must be 4 ft high. They were staked in the beginning but because they were so heavy, they broke the stakes. It will be interesting to see how the peas will be picked and if I miss any. Berries are slow this year. The blackberries are still green and small, only a handful of huckleberries (which I gave to Doug), salal are few and I did not see any salmon berries. the Hopefully, the blackberries produce well so more jam can be made as it is all, all gone. Only a few relish remain.

The annual potluck at the Blue roof is next weekend. It should be a good time. It will be interesting to see what George will cook up!

Busy times

Almost full docks

July was slow to start with but the last three weeks have been busy! We have been enjoying all the returning boats and all the new ones. Melissa and Signehadbeen here since the 15th and left on Tuesday. We have enjoyed their visit and Signe has been a hit on the docks and in the restaurant giving a performance during Charlie's singing.

The weather has smartened up, with the sun starting to shine and warmth starting. With all the rain we have had and the cool weather a jungle has developed in the yard. Mowing is difficult with it being so wet but at least everything is green!

Captain Charlie came back on the 17th and gave us our last performance. We have sold over 50 CD's and have requested more. It is a wonderful promotion for the Broughtons and we are happy to be apart of it.

Charlie entertained before supper and then again sang songs from his CD after supper and before the fireworks. Christine performed a duet with him. The rain stopped long enough for the fireworks. Even some dancing was done. A good time was had by all.

Old Friends and New ones

It has been a busy two weeks. Nice to see old friends and new ones. Charlie and Dianne from Dreamtime were here and Colyn and Connie on Seajay arrived on the same day. Had a wonderful night on the deck with Charlie singing his songs from his CD. A good time was had by all.

Mama and cubs are still around. She goes up to the head of the estuary once in a while. Just when I think she is gone, she pops up again on the other side. I chased away a male grizzly out of the yard last Friday. As usual, these things happen when George is gone for the day. He had taken Doug to town. It is quite unusal to have grizzlies here. I even had one in the yard yesterday, but it went across the estuary as I was walking up to the house. We still have the big black and there was even a small black with two cubs the other day. As long as they stay across on the other side I do not mind. It makes for a good attraction and conversation item.

The restaurant has been open for two weeks now and has been quite busy. The "new" fish and chips has been quite popular and so has the 14" pizza. WE LOVE our new deep fryer!! but it sounds like a jet engine when it starts, lol. Cinnamon buns have been flying off the shelf! Colyn and Connie gave us a nice picture with 5 red shoes. Guess they get 5 desserts now!!

Soon Mother Mary will be here and we are really looking forward to her visit. I know Colyn and Connie are looking forward to seeing her as well.

Will try to mow the grass today and a little bit has been done everyday. We take the tractor back and forth to the house and as we go we mow. We need to get a small golf cart or gator for our travels back and forth. Our legs and feet appreciate it. I guess when mom is here we will have to put a blanket in the wagon for her!

The garden has sprouted and things are agrowing. The hummingbirds are aplenty and we only feed them once a day.

Cinnamon Buns and Pizza!!

Well, the restaurant is almost, almost ready. Just have a little bit of cleaning to do. The gas is hooked up and the electrics in the new part is done. We have done a couple of pizzas already, but up at the house and delivered to the boats. The new generator will be here next week, delivered by Marine Link. How exciting. We were able to get the big diesel generator going, so we will have no problem with baking and cooking.Yeah!! We are excited to use the new deep fryer and try out the new fish that we have. Steak will be on the menu this year as well.

Mama grizzly and the two cubs have seemed to have moved on, at least they are not across the estuary at the moment. They could be at the head, as there is lots of grass up there. There is a big black bear hanging around and I think it is the same one that was here before.

We are looking forward to the boats this year and expect to work hard.

A so-so productive week

With George gone and the weather not so nice, I was able to do a few things down at the barge and in the yard. The grass was mowed promptly to keep the bear away.

I was also to straighten up the new kitchen area some, but have to wait for more cupboards and shelves to finish. Doesn`t the new deep fryer look GREAT! Can do lots and lots of fries and fish now!

There were a few boats that came in, returning customers like Kerverza and Cygnus to name a few but some that had not been here before. They enjoyed watching the Grizzly sow and her two cubs that were across the estuary. I believe that she is gone now as Thursday morning I saw a black wolf over there and then saw mama moving her cubs up to the head of the estuary and I have not seen her since. Hopefully she is not on this side.

George will be back on Monday, hopefully with a generator and then the restaurant will be open for business. June 1 is our expected date.

We had a few nice days but mostly wind and rain.

A busy April and first two weeks of May

In April we had over 10 boats which is something we definitely did not expect. George was busy getting the addition of the kitchen done. Brother-in-law Terry arrived on May 9 just in time to help George as I had to return to Alberta for family matters.

Terry and George finished the addition and we will be open for suppers in the next couple of weeks. We hope to be completely set up by June 1!

We have had quite a few boats already in May, with most heading to Alaska. The weather has really not cooperated, with wind and rain still. We are all longing for SPRING!! and some sun! Yesterday, the lawn was mowed. It was turning into a jungle with all the rain.

We had a visitor on Tuesday night. A big black bear walked into the yard. We scared it away with the air horn but it decided to return twice on Wednesday. Of course George and Terry we on their way back to Alberta. Between Bear (the dog) and I we were able to chase it away in the morning but it returned later that afternoon. I had not gone out of the house so did not realize that Mr. Bear was eating the tall grass by the garden. When I went to start the generator at 4:00 there he was in the garden. I think I scared him more than he scared me as by the time I got the horn (5 seconds) he was gone and has not been back since.

Yesterday a neighbor at the red roof (Little Mist Island) noticed a Grizzly sow with two cubs on the neighboring shore. I sure hope she decides to move on, as grizzlies usually do. The islands here are too small for them. The deer are also back and I hope they decide to leave the lilys alone! they ate them all last year. It is nice to see them as we had not seen them since last fall and were afraid that the cougar or wolves got them.

We have two boats tonight and is a good start to the long weekend. The weather is supposed to good, so maybe some of the garden can be planted.

Spring Cleaning

The long dock has been pressure washed and the wide dock is almost done, the walkway is finally done (except for the very top by the ramp).

George has finished the steps to the store as when we moved the barge the steps had to go! He is busy doing the ceiling to the addition to the kitchen. The door is in. He has been busy making benches for beside the steps to the store.

The New Fingers

All in all it has been a busy couple of weeks, trying to work around the rain. It snowed yesterday, go figure! The sun was out today, so much work was accomplished. Bob and Doug came for steak and eggs, and I continued to work on the walkway. The new pressure washer works like a charm.

Our First Boat

We had our first boat today. A sailboat that is on its way home to Alaska. We have been busy getting the dock ready for the season. I have been pressure washing the dock. Boy did the birds and otters make a mess! The long dock is done and I am working on the wide dock. Next will be the deck of the Red Shoe and then the walkway. The walkway was not done last year, and it surely needs it. It was quite slippery this winter. George has been busy getting the addition of the Red Shoe finished. We have purchased a propane deep fryer which will really help with meals. New steps are being put up for the store and we are working on getting a generator. Gift items have been ordered and picked up so the gift store will be quite full this year. We are still sourcing out childrens items.
Had our first hummingbird on the 1st and no it was not an April Fool's joke. The robins are in abundance, with the juncos enjoying the feeders. There are very few tulips but the grape hyacinths are blooming as well as the daffodils. Flowers are very late this year with the cold weather.
I am anxious to get into the garden and get more flowers planted.

Well, George is back from his trip to Alberta. His checkup went well. He brought Christine and her beau Tim back with him. They will be here a week and then I have to take them back. I have to pack up my mother's apartment as she is now in the nursing home.

Sunday February 20 was moving day for us as the barge was moved to its new location. Everything went like clockwork and we thank Doug and Bob for doing the major work in the move. They know what they are doing as they have done this several times before. The barge is now in place beside the dock and ramp to shore.

The new piles have been put in and the damaged pile (the one that was bent over) has been replaced. It was actually cracked at the bottom. George has finished the new fingers and they have been put in place. Now is time to work on the restaurant and get it back in shape.

The sun has finally popped out so hopefully spring is here. The birds are coming back and the primroses are trying to bloom. All the flowers are late this year. Daffodils are just starting to bud out and are very short.

Got word from Charlie and Diane Long that they will be here on July 1 and Charlie will be performing his new songs. He has developed a CD and we will be selling it in our gift shop. We have heard one of the songs "Cruisin' Away" and really enjoyed it and know that everyone else will.

Seattle Boat Show and other stuff

We went to the Seattle Boat Show on Saturday Jan 22. Pierre from Echo Bay said that we could give him some brochures to hand out. It was a nice day. It has been several years since we attended a boat show anywhere, so we really enjoyed ourselves.

We walked around Pike's Place and George had a coffee at the Starbucks there. It was something that we just had to do.

George was under strict instructions from Melissa to have a coffee from there, especially since we drink Pike's Place. She used to be a shift supervisor at a Starbucks in Calgary. Darren worked at one as well.

We also went to the Seattle Outlet Stores, which we were told about. It was interesting but not what we expected. The last time we were in Seattle was 35 years ago during our honeymoon. We enjoyed our time there and the drive to Seattle and back.

George has been busy getting firewood and working on the addition upstairs on the barge. We were going to move it today, but the wind came up so was not able to. Doug is doing well, and comes for coffee at the barge with George quite often.

George will be leaving tomorrow for his check-up in Alberta. He will be bringing Christine and a friend back with him. It will be reading week, so she can spend some time here. I will be taking her back at the end of the month, and then I have to pack up my mother's apartment, as she has gone into the nursing home. She will be 90 in a month.

Christine is doing well in university and looking forward to being here for reading week. Melissa, Darren and Signe are enjoying Grande Prairie. Darren will be doing his practicum there. Melissa has started a dayhome. Signe is growing and likes having children to play with. We are able to talk to them all through Skype which is wonderful. It makes it so much nicer being able to see everyone and we do not feel quite to far away.

Happy New Year to all our family and friends We wish that everyone has a prosperous year with good health.

2011 has started out to be a cold one in the bay. Today, the ice has been around all day. We have not seen the bay so socked in before. Doug had told us that it does happen and today has proven him right.

Since coming back from Alberta almost a week ago, we have not done much. George has been checking on the dock and barge everyday and yes, George it is still there. We were busy warming up the house which it is still trying to do. Since there is no central heating and we shut everything down when we leave, it was a might chilly to say the least.

It usually takes a couple of days to warm up properly, with the fireplace going, propane heaters going and electric ones when the geny is on.

The birds do not seem to be bothered by the cold, as the varied thrush are enjoying the bugs in the ground, along with the odd flicker. Eagles have been flying around the estuary hunting and the geese congregate on the beaches. The residence flock is around somewhere, but not in the bay at the moment.

Bear is friskier than ever since her food has been changed. What a difference it made! The cougar was still around at Christmas according to Doug, but has not been seen since. Hope it stays that way.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

George, Gail and Bear wish all a Christmas of cherished memories and a New Year full of good health and good cheer. We wish to thank everyone for their patronage and hope to see you again in 2011.

We are in Alberta with family and friends for Christmas and will be spending most of the time in Peace River. We are also very excited to watch Signe open presented Christmas day. This will be such a spectacular time for her this year. She was only a month old last year. Trouble is her second name as she is now walking and giving her mom pay back time.

We had a turkey lupper (lunch and supper) on the 11th with several of our neighbors. This is the fourth year that we have it. Jen (post office), Clint (sailcone), Bob and Pat (Lagoon Cove), hermit Bob (lagoon Cove) and Doug all enjoyed the turkey. We tried to get Elenor and Bing from Hadley Bay but they were not able to attend.

We had just beat the snow when we arrived in Peace River. We definately do not miss the snow and cold. Minus 20. Brrrrrrrrr.

Well, we have had our first snow. It started on Wednesday afternoon with a blizzard and lasted until Thursday night. We had over 3 inches and then it decided to rain all night Thursday. Friday was a beautiful winter day, with some snow still on the ground. Vancouver Island itself did not fair well and had lots of snow and then freezing rain.

We also had our coldest day ever! that we have seen since moving here. On Monday, the daytime temperatue was minus 12 C and since we were gone overnight Sunday, it was only 2 inside the house. TALK ABOUT COLD!! Thank goodness for electric blankets! We have no proper heat in the house so it was a tad chilly. It took two days to warm the house up once we lit the propane heaters, had the fireplace going and when the geny was on we had the electric heaters going. Once the house is warm it stays that way.

George had been busy finishing the walkway to shore and has succeeded in doing a nice job, which he always does. It is such an improvement and now looks like a proper dock. It is a little slippery at the moment until we put some rolled roofing down. George skiied down it the other day. The otters like the frost on the dock and when then discover the new walkway, they will have a hayday!

December is almost upon us and George and I are excited to spend time with Signe. Of course everyone else as well. Signe is now a year old and is such a delight. She is a good natured little girl. She is walking now and giving her mom and dad lots of trouble. They have moved to Grande Prairie and have rented a house. Darren is doing his practicum close by and Melissa has been certified for a day home worker.

Christine is doing well in university and enjoys university life. Being such a social person, she gets along well with everyone. She will be helping her dad this Christmas break in our hardware store in northern Alberta.

Happy Birthday Bear!

Bear is now officially 12 years old, as it is her birthday today. She has been spoilt lately, spending the night in the house. Old age has crept up and she feels the cold. She has been quite frisky lately, after two bouts of antibiotics and having her ears cleaned. She is deaf in the one ear because it had cauliflowered and her ear canal is swollen shut. I will be making a sign that goes on her back that asks not to feed her. She is allergic and is on a special diet. Because of the type of dog that she is, yeast forms in her ears and causes all sorts of problems. When Sue comes to visit, Bear and him like to chase each other. Have not seen Bear do that for a few years.

Belatedly we wish all our neighbors to the south a wonderul Thanksgiving. It is the start of the holiday season now.

Happy Halloween to everyone. It has been a busy month and a half. George went for his check up and received a clean bill of health in regards to his throat. His next visit is in January. It has been windy and rainy for the last week or so. We have had a few nice days however and were able to accomplish a few things.

Terry, our brother-in-law was here for a week at the end of September. He was able to help George finish the dock to the ramp and a few other things. Looks good. No more ramp on the dock now, just the one to the walkway. Thank you Terry for all your help.

Been busy canning tomatoes and making jam and zucchini relish. Thanks to Doug for the extra jars. I really needed them. I have over 4 dozen jars of jam and 2 doz jars of relish. There are 18 jars of stewed tomatoes and still more tomatoes to can. What to make next??

Now that we have had some rain, the garden decided to take off, but still only 6 plants of peas and 3 of beans which are long gone now. Damn those birds, lol.!! Winter produce is still thriving and I am looking forward to some beets and turnip. All for me as George does not like them. His loss!!

The geese have been abundant as of late and there are 6 great white breasted geese that have taken up residence. They do not scare away easily.

George has been busy taking the wall out of the addition to the restaurant. After Terry left George found out he had a blood clot in his leg, so had to be stationary for about three weeks. It was hard for him to sit all day with his leg up, but it paid off as the clot has dissolved. He is still on "rat poison" for awhile to keep his blood thinned out.

I was able to go to Edmonton for 8 days at the middle of October. It was so nice to see the "girls" and Darren too. Melissa is looking good and Signe is just "trouble". She has a real personality now and is almost walking unassisted. It won't be long. Darren is doing well in university and starts his practicum in November. They have since moved to Grande Prairie, as Darren's practicum is in Beaverlodge which is not far away. Christine is doing excellent in university and has settled into the residence quite nicely. She is enjoying herself and her and Loren do alot together. Logan is back in Peace River and is working hard.

Don't expect to get any trick or treaters this year. I would have thought that someone in the neighborhood would dress up, but it is not to be. Maybe Doug will be dressed up when he comes to dinner tonight.

The season has now ended, or so it seems. Yesterday was the first day since the middle of June that we had no boats. We even had supper at the house! We had a very busy and exciting summer, exceeding last years by quite abit. It was more than we expected. We made over 300 pizzas and just as many fish and chips and burgers.

We enjoyed each and every boat that came to our dock. Christine and Logan left on Aug 26 and George and I had to fend for ourselves, which we did quite nicely. A routine had been set up which made everything so much more easy.

Crabs were being caught with gusto as Christine and Logan showed. We saw a Grizzly at the end of August on our beach between the Doug and us. Doug called us to warn us of his coming. Of course we chased him back towards Doug's. Colyn, Connie and I then went and picked plums as Dougs, so the bear is gone now.

Had a cougar in the yard the other night. I was by myself as George was in Campbell River getting the Tawun home. (the engines were fixed). I have never heard such a strange noise before and do not want to hear it again. I scared the cougar away, but he left slowly. I believe he was either hurt or sick as he was not moving very fast. It is gone now and we have not heard it at all. However, we will not be going up the logging road any time soon as that is the direction it went.

Have seen a big black bear at the head of the estuary, which means that there are no more grizzlies in the area. The bears have not been around all summer.

Berries are all picked, cucumbers, tomatoes and zucchini are in abundance. Time for canning! All the jam sold this summer, so time to make more for next year. The garden is late this year, because of the dry summer and cold spring. Now everything is growing like mad as we have had quite a bit of rain lately. Where was that when we needed it?!

Fall is soon upon us and time to get ready for winter. Wood needs to be gathered, things need to be put away and the barge needs to be shut down. We will still be open for business however, and can do pizzas at the house and deliver to the customer.

Thank you each and every boat that graced our dock this year. We thoroughly enjoyed having you and hope to see you again next year.

Now, to go see that granddaughter of ours!!

Where has the time gone. Summer is almost over and so is the season. It had been slow for the last couple of days, but we were full again tonight. The weather has not been the best this year with only a few days with no wind. We did have much needed rain however.

Talk about being busy!! We had NO IDEA that we would be this busy this fast. July 1st was a huge hit! Free Chili and hotdogs for all the dock guests and for the neighbors as well. The Fireworks were awesome and went off without a hitch. All the boats were decorated for the occasion and Charlie from Dreamtime entertained us with his fabulous guitar playing and singing.

July 4th was not so nice and the wind started to howl. We had free Chili and hotdogs for everyone again, but no fireworks because of the wind. We will either save them for next year or do them on BC day.

Thanks to Terry and Maureen as they did a wonderful job of decorating the restaurant and top deck. The
GIGANTIC step is also gone thanks to Terry and Logan.

Homemade fries are a huge success and I have been having to make a trip to Campbell River every week to replenish supplies.

THANK YOU to everyone for making this a very good season so far. Now if only the wind would stop and the sun would shine more. Do need rain however, as it is very, very dry.

Our internet has been sporatic so this may be the only post for awhile.

July 1 and July 4, there will be fireworks at Port Harvey Marine. Come and join us for chili on a bun and watch the fireworks. Horseshoes are planned.

Quite a few meals have been prepared in the newly licensed pub. This year's menu consists of burger and fries, fish and chips and of course Pizza - two sizes. The fries are all hand made.

Boy am I ever behind the times. It has been a very busy month. Mother Mary was here for 9 days and left yesterday. She was a great help and we will miss her. Our boating season exploded with a bang on June 20th and have been full three times already. What a great start to the season. Returning boaters were a joy to see again.

Little Signe even had a few gifts given to her. Thank you Brenda and Al from the Raven and Colin and Connie from Sea Jay.

The garden is finally planted and the grass has been cut. The crew from Mosey used the machete and opened up the trail to the logging road and the trail to under the trees. We had not been back there since February so did not know how overgrown it had become.

Logan is now here and will be helping us for the summer. He has learnt alot and is a big help and is willing to learn. He has been thrown into the thick of things as the day after he arrived, our season began.

The weather has also settled down abit and we have had a few nice days. The wind is still a problem at times but it is not as cold as it was.

Our neighbor's dog Racer fought with a couple of wolves a month ago and had to be put down. It was a very sad time in the bay. He was a lovely dog and we will miss him. I think that the wolves are gone now as Racer got his licks in as well and injured one of the wolves. We believe that Racer was protecting Sue the year old pup.

Kate and Joel are out now which means that the summer has definitely started. John and Nancy will be next and our bay will be complete for the summer.

Received sad news on Wednesday the mail day. Dave Bowler, who helped us for awhile last spring, passed away in May. Our hearts go out to Merle. Ocean Child will not be seen for awhile but Merle is still living on it on Quadra Island. Dave built the bench on top of our walkway.

Visit from the Prairie- By Melissa

On May 5 Signe and I flew in from the prairies to see Grandma and Grandpa Cambridge. Grandpa picked us up at Yves River in his boat and drove us across.

Signe and I helped Gail with the gift store. I could have bought so many things! Is it too early to think about Christmas gifts?

There are wonderful pieces by local artisans as well as from my Aunt Debe. The beautiful bags are hers.

We brought in some Rocky Mountain Soap- they are based in Canmore Alberta and are 100% natural. Signe loves the soap!
There are many great books- even for children.
We worked on making sure the dock was shipshape for new arrivals, including new signs.
Inside and out.

The west coast is a different color of green, and the flowers are beautiful.

Everything was just beautiful and we were so glad to visit Port Harvey again!

The last 17 days have been busy, busy, busy. Melissa and baby came on the 5th and stayed 10 days. Melissa was a big help and so was baby. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with them both. It has been a very long time since we had a 5.5 month old in the house. They are so full of wonderment and intrigue. Everything is new everyday and there are discoveries everywhere.

The dock has been washed and the top deck as well. The gift shop is done and the store is being stocked. The washroom and shower are almost complete and the new dock to shore is on its way. George has been really busy and Melissa helped out alot.

George brought the washer and dryer back with him, so the laundry area is also almost complete.

We have had a few boats already and have made pizza for them. Since the restaurant is not quite ready to open, we made the pizza at the house and delivered them to the boats. Yesterday, Tippe-Canoe and Nirvana were here and we all enjoyed pizza, salad (thanks Naty) and chocolate cake and ice cream. The restaurant had its first seating, even though the pizza was baked at the house. Too bad we could not bring the bakery oven up to the house for the winter. Wishful thinking I would say.

The lawn was mowed today and it took me all afternoon. It is very lush and has been growing like a weed. Oh wait - the lawn is mostly weeds!!. It looks nice and green anyway.

I will be at the Chatham Channel Post Office tomorrow to relieve Jenny as she has to go to town. My first job for another company in over 14 years. I had been basically self employed since then working for our own companies.

The weather is now cooperating and planting time is almost upon us. I am excited to get the garden planted and the flowers out.

It has been a slow haul trying to get everything done. The weather does not want to cooperate at all. When it is nice, we work to catch up.

The laundry area is almost done, pressure washing the dock to get the slime off is tedious and time consuming, but the gift shop is almost done, just a few more shelves. Product has arrived and I am impressed. Jenny from Chatham Channel brought her items this morning between sun showers. Everything looks good!!

George had his three month check up and returned on Wednesday. Everything is fine and he has graduated to a six month check up now. I was hoping to get alot done while he was gone, but again Mr. Weatherman did not cooperate. I was able however to get caught up on the books.

George brought lots of goodies back with him. Our washer and dryer are now ready to install, just have to get the coin slots and boxes, which unfortunately were not included. When ordered, I assumed it was included because it did not say that it wasn't. Never assume!! lol.

Melissa and baby will be here next week and we are very excited and are counting the sleeps. 4 MORE!! Mother Mary will be here in June for a visit. It was a very nice surprise when we received her e-mail stating she booked a ticket.

She has never been here in June and I hope she will be surprised at the hummingbirds.

They are hungry, hungry little creatures. They are a real joy to observe. Hopefully we can put a feeder at the store this year.

Two deer wandered through the yard a couple of weeks ago. It was nice to see and yesterday we saw our first black bear across the estuary. We were starting to wonder where they were as we usually see them by now.

The sun is shining through the windows and the wind has stopped. Hopefully it stays that way, I mean really this is May 1!! time for some heat!!

I can't believe how the time has flown by. It is almost the end of April and we still have things to do- the dock and top deck need a good pressure wash. Shells galore and green slime from the rain! Grass needs to be cut again. It was done once already. Garlic oil needs to be sprayed on the lawn to keep the mosquitoes away. So much to do and so little time!! Some things cannot be done until it warms up and the rain stops (if it ever will!!)

I was in Alberta for two weeks at the beginning of March. I had a great time with Melissa, Darren, Signe and Christine. Signe has grown sooo much. Melissa and her will be here in May for 10 days. Exciting times. Christine will be here in June.

Our brother-in-law, Gary is here right now for 8 days. He has not been here for two years, right after we bought the barge, and was quite surprised at the change. It looked quite derelect when we first bought it. He has been busy helping George with the new dock section and walkway to the ramp. Now if the rain will only stop ( we did have some nice days though so can't complain).
George has almost got the washrooms and laundry done. He also decided to create a gift store in the barge. It is the room behind the counter. I was busy painting the ceiling and floor.

We received items for the gift store and I have been arranging them. He have featured local Vancouver Island artisans in our store. We will also be featuring some of Just Jen's items (from Chatham Channel Lodge) and Steve's leather work. There will be recycled glass items, pottery, raindrops and crystal, sand blocks and pyramids, Island Art Cards and Matted Cards, Postcards, Rocky Mountain Soap (which all natural), leather works, hoodies, homemade items and books. Just Jen has a variety of items too numerous to list. We will be adding to this as the summer goes on.
George will be going for his three month check up again at the end of the week. He will be bringing the new washer and dryer back with him.
We have our first boat of the season at the dock tonight, the Kirkwall with Art and Di. They were our first boat last year and our first boat this year. We were happy to see them. They both look healthy and are on an early start to Alaska. Art helped George and Gary with the new dock section. Thank you Art.

The month has gone by fast. George is back from his check up and has been busy working on the addition to the barge. Just yesterday, all the walls were finally up on the upstairs and the door to nowhere is now to somewhere.

Downstairs will be a washroom, shower and laundry. I helped raise the walls, which I did not like because I do not like heights. It was done none the less.

We had the highest tide we had ever seen on Jan 30. Note the firepit. Now I know why there is flotsam on the flower beds.

Our nephew Ryan and his daughter Haley were here for a few days at the beginning of February. Ryan was here two years ago (remember the bobcat in the water!) and Haley was here three years ago. She is four years old now and will be in Kindergarten in the fall. Her birthday is in December so she can go a year early. Ryan was surprised at the changes. I hope they come back this summer.

The day Ryan and Haley left, I also went to Campbell River. Our daughter Christine was arriving in Comox the next morning. She was here for a week and was also surprised at the changes. She had helped renovate the barge to what it is now. She is also the one responsible for building the walkway on shore. She will be here for the summer and we are looking forward to her help. She is quite excited.

I am hoping to go back to Alberta for a week in March to see our Signe, Melissa and Darren. She has grown so much and is now 3 months old. It will be nice to have them here for awhile this summer.

Spring was here briefly for week and luckily it was while Christine was here. It rained while Ryan was here but it did not stop Haley from being outside. We even went down the logging road to the gravel pit at the top of the hill. We pulled the trailer with the lawn tractor (wanna be quad) and Ryan, Haley and I rode on the trailer. We went to get wood. Bear even liked to ride the trailer as she is getting old and she gets tired. It is a long, long way up the road. Haley figures that Bear does not have enough toys.

Christine went kayaking and was quite disturbed that 5 seals decided to follow her. She did not like that at all!! Her and I also went on the mail run and quite enjoyed ourselves. Christine was able to take some wonderful pictures.

The flowers do not know what time of year it is. The snow drops are blooming as well as the primroses (about a month early). The tulips, daffodils and grape hyacinths are in bud and some are blooming. Even the peonies are sprouting out of the ground. We still expect a cold spell so I hope they do not die. I have been told that it has been an unusally warm winter, but wet and windy.

March is two days away. As they say beware of the ides of March. We will see what it brings.

Rain, Rain and more rain. Wind, wind and more wind. When will it stop!! It has been extremely wet on our island. If only it could be harnessed better for the summer months when it is so dry. Maybe we will have to dig a dugout. That would take quite awhile, being done by hand. Anyone know of a small used backhoe.

We have been busy getting wood for the fireplace. Still haven't got the insert yet. George is back in Alberta right now. He had a check up today and everything is A-okay. He will be going to Peace River to visit family and then to Red Earth, where our True Value hardware store is. Mother Mary is now in Egypt and quite enjoying herself. She went with Val our sister-in-law. I am curious to see how Egypt has changed in the last 33 years since we lived there. I imagine some has changed but Cairo was such a huge city then so must be gigantic now.

Silly primroses are blooming and the peonies, tulips and daffodils are breaking ground. They don't know what time of year it is. January is too, too early for these delicate things. Snow drops are emerging as well, but I expect them to. The winter has been so mild. I fear that we may get a cold snap in February. We usually do.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL. We hope all had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. We did. We arrived back on the 3rd. That is the earliest that we have come back at Christmas. We were surprised that the weather is okay. It is only a little cold and today it is windy. We expected worse.

We spent New Year's Eve with Melissa, Darren and Signe. She is called pigne now as she is a little porker when it comes to food. She has gained over 2 lbs since Christmas. She now weighs 9 lbs 9 ozs.

Melissa and Signe may come for a visit in August. They have decided not to run the Restaurant/Bakery this year. It is understandable with a new baby. We will make due. Our other daughter Christine will be here and we may hire someone to help. We have someone in mind. We have to make some sort of accommodation for them, but the old float house will be renovated to make it liveable. It won't take much work.

We have been busy getting firewood. It will be nice once we get a proper heating system. Doug has a wood stove for us, but it is a matter of getting it over here. I guess it is quite heavy. We have two chimneys so that won't be a problem. We were looking at an insert for the fireplace but we do not think it would fit in the type of fireplace that we have. We are also looking into some sort of furnace or propane/diesel heater. There are many options. The propane heater we have now is not efficient and heats our bedroom toasty warm, but takes a long time for the rest of the house and uses too much propane.

Yellow primroses were blooming when we got home. They do not know what time of year it is. George will be busy fixing up the barge now.

ITS A GIRL!! Signe Deborah was born on November 24 at 2:16 am via C-section. Melissa and Signe are doing well. She gave her mother a hard time trying to get out but she made it. She was one day early from her due date. We are happy, happy grandparents. I was in Edmonton from November 23 to December 1 to help Melissa. I thoroughly enjoyed my little granddaughter.
Doug is thrilled and so are all our other neighbors. It will be nice to have a baby in the bay again they say. Signe is a Norwegian name (as Darren's family is Norwegian) and Deborah is George's sister.

November weather has been absolutely horrible this year. We were certainly getting tired of the rain. We had puddles all over the yard. There was ice in the bay on Wednesday and yesterday. With all the rain, the rivers and creeks are overflowing so there is quite abit of fresh water in the bay to freeze.

The water is crystal clear and the air is fresh. The sun is shining and it is brisk. Everything smells so clean and new. It is getting ready for a new year.

We will be in Alberta again for Christmas at Mother Mary's. George is anxious to meet his granddaughter. He says he will be teaching her to run a boat and to fish, but not for a few years yet.

We are still busy gathering wood and George has been busy fixing the end of the barge. It was slow going with all the rain and wind. George will be going to Masset in the Queen Charlottes to look at a boat we are thinking of buying. It will make it easier to get around.

Time sure goes by fast. I did not realize that the last entry was on Sept 22!! Not much has happened since then. George had gone back to Alberta to spend time at our True Value store there. Our manager is on extended sick leave and we have to travel back and forth. I also spent a week there. It also allowed me to see Debe and Gary, as I stayed at mother Mary's. I am sorry that I did not get to see Terry and Maureen, but we were all busy. I spent the weekend in Edmonton and was able to see our daughter Christine, as I had not seen her since March and Melissa and Darren. Melissa is getting quite large and is patiently waiting until the end of this month. Darren is busy with school. We all went to Ikea and did some baby shopping. It was so much fun!! I am just waiting till after the baby is born and then I will have a lot more fun.
The "door to nowhere" now goes somewhere. George has been busy fixing the last end of the barge. He has put up a top floor and will be framing in walls soon. We plan on extending the kitchen part of the restaurant to allow for more seating space. Underneath this will be the new laundry and shower/washroom.
Coastal Missions were here again on October 8 and 9th. It was really nice seeing them again. Too bad that George was gone this year. This is when he went back to Alberta. Roy, Gloria and Petunia are doing well and were amazed at the amount of work that had been done since their last visit. Everything was still a shell and we were still working on the dock and barge. Doug and I had supper on the Coastal Messenger.
The weather has been up and down. Lately we have been getting typical November weather which is wind and rain. Our well is overflowing at the moment which is a good sign and our cistern is full. If only it would last longer but water must be used at times. We would smell horribly otherwise.
November 6 was Carl's 70th birthday and we had him and Doug over for supper. I think Carl liked his chocolate cake and homemade ice cream. Yard work is getting done and the garden is almost put away. Jam and relish are being processed and I hope to sell some next year.
We have a resident heron staying on the dock. He has made it his home and the 6 geese are prowling around. There were 4 swans at the head of the estuary last week, but lately there has only been one. I feel sorry for this lonely swan as all he does is swim around the bay, honking for his fellow swans. I hope he finds them. They are such beautiful birds. Juncos, Varied Thrushes, Flickers, Stellar Jays, Robins, Chickadees and Sparrows have frequented the lawn, especially after the rain. There is a feeder out but is not being used.
This is the time of year for really high tides during the day. Its a good thing we made the walkway so high!

Doug and I heard a pack of wolves in October. They were in the trees between our two places. We have not heard them since and I hope we do not. There is nothing here for them.
The three otters are having fun on the end of the dock. They especially like it when there is frost on the dock and they can slide around. Trees still have leaves, some green but mostly yellow, pink, orange and red. The wild cherry, red currant and big leaf maple are especially lovely.

The season seems to be over. We had one boat on Sunday and we thoroughly enjoyed their visit. A boat called yesterday morning from Port McNeill but did not get here. They called again and mentioned that they only got as far as Telegraph Cove.

Melissa left on the 7th. She will be missed. I enjoyed her company. We have not spent so much time together since she was in high school. Soon she will be a mom too and we will be grandparents. Joy, Joy.

George and I had a great time with Mother Mary. She was quite impressed with all that had been done since her last visit in October. She even helped with a couple of pizzas that were made. Her plan was to help me when George was gone for his check up (which went really well by the way). Mary and I went on the mail run with Doug and then Mary went by herself on the mail run. She had a good time. We cleaned out the fridge in the store and sorted things in the restaurant. We picked the plums from Doug's tree as the bear would not stay away, but now it likes the apples on our tree. These apples are not eating apples as they are quite tart and bitter, but the bear likes them.

Plum jam and zucchini relish were made much to the delight of Mary and Doug. They both liked both.

George and I are now getting down to business of getting ready for next year. We are amazed at how many boats we had considering advertising was only by word of mouth.

Kate and Joel have left. We enjoyed the times we had with them and look forward to next year. It is fairly quiet in the bay now. I am looking forward to getting yard work done and spring flowers planted. 80 tulips will be going in soon. I hope to have more lilys next year as they are my favorite and easier to grow. The weather has been cooperating as it is quite hot right now. I hope it stays for awhile.

George is busy constructing the end of the barge (the one with the door to nowhere). The floor is done and soon he will be putting up walls. His plan is to extend the kitchen upstairs to make more room. We found it to be a little cramped at times this year, especially when we had a house full.

More projects will be started and finished by spring.

The last two weeks have been hectic to say the least. It has slowed down abit now and we will still be having boats in September. Darren has returned to Edmonton as he starts University soon and Melissa will be leaving before the 7th. George's mom - Mother Mary will be here on the 7th.

We have had quite a few returning boats and we were glad to see them and hope they had a wonderful summer up north. There are still a few that have just started out. Fall cruising can be quite nice. We get quite excited when we see returning boats, its like seeing friends again after a long time. The boaters are wonderful people and we enjoy their visits. A few have stayed for several days, and they are special to us. They know who they are.

We were all able to attend the annual Port Harvey Pot Luck. It was held at Kate and Joel's this year and may be held here next year. It was nice to see all the neighbors, from Lagoon Cove to Burial Cove and Soderman Cove and of course from Port Harvey itself. A great time was had be all. Last year it was held at John and Nancy's.

The days are getting shorter and the nights are longer. It is still quite warm and we have very little rain. The blackberries have been abundant and there were even some huckleberries which are quite good. Time to make jam now. Melissa wants some before she leaves.

Have lots of zucchini as well and plan on making relish which was George's dads favorite. The flowers have died, but that was expected with no moisture and not being able to water. Can't believe that the garden survived, all except the potatoes. The tomatoes are going to be plentiful, if they ripen. May have to force them to.

We are looking forward to fall and cooler weather. Logs need to be gathered and split for the winter and the garden has to be put away. We will be busy this winter making more dock, the showers and washrooms, laundry etc.

WOW is all we can say. It has been a very busy busy month and a few weeks. We had no idea how everything would take off. On July 7th, Melissa, Darren and myself went to Campbell River. As we were crossing Johnstone Strait we were right in the middle of a flotilla of boats. I mentioned jokingly that they were probably going to tie up at our dock. Melissa and Darren were catching a flight back to Grande Prairie for a wedding and I had to pick up the truck in Campbell River. George and Doug had brought Big Bro home. I was in such a frizzle went I left home that I forgot my cell phone and had to use Melissa's. I was trying to phone home to tell George to phone her phone to get ahold of me. I did a couple of stops in Campbell River when I looked at the phone and realized that it was on silent. When I turned it on, Melissa phoned me and told me George was trying to get ahold of me. I guess my earlier joke was not a joke. I was in Campbell River for only an hour and George wanted me to come back as there were 13 boats at the dock and several moored out. Low and behold the 8 boats from the Royal Victoria Yacht Club showed up (we were told that morning that they were at least 2 days behind) and a few others. George was up to his elbows in Sticky bun dough and we also had 4 suppers to make. This was the beginning of a very, very busy week. We did quite a few pizza's and we are now known for the Port Harvey Pizza, or so we have been told.

Bob Hale from the Wagoneer was here twice and gave us a nice review. Marianne Scott from Salty Tales was here and well as Bob Lane from the Passagemaker (twice). Many boats that were here in June and early July have stopped in on their way home. We want to thank all those people on all those boats that have been excited for us and have been helping to "spread the word". You know who you are and the boats you have sent also know who you are. We have met some wonderful, wonderful people and have been thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

Melissa and Darren have had appointments to go to and it seems that everytime they leave - WE GET BUSY and fill up. Somedays, it is 14 boats (with one tied behind the barge) and other days it is 8 boats and we are full. Then there are the days that we have only one or two, which we do not mind as it allows us to rejuvenate abit and to work on getting the kinks out.

The store is getting great reviews. We now have some produce (some from the garden) and some dairy products and eggs, bacon and hotdogs (to go with the buns from the bakery). The restaurant is busy most nights and the bakery is busy baking (Melissa and George of course, with Darren once in awhile). I do not seem to have good success in the bakery department so do not do much. I concentrate on the store and the yard, garden and the books of course.

Since I kept breaking the lawn tractor, George broke down and got a new one. Doug needed one as well so we had two new tractors to play with. I was under strict instructions from Doug that I was not allowed to mow any of the lawn until he did his. His was quite out of control and quite tall. As a result of not being able to mow the mosquitoes became alittle out of control. The garlic wore off and the propane tanks were empty. We have not had time to spray garlic but the machines are up and running again and are making a little dent in the population. We suggest to customers to use the repellant that we have on a table on the dock, when they go for a walk. The little buzzers are bad at the back of the house and towards the well, which is of course the way to the trails.

The three C's were here for a week. Clint, Chelsea and Cael (Melissa and Darren are god parents to Cael and George and I are god-grandparents of sorts). It was fun having them here. They stayed on Big Bro and were a big, big help to all of us. Thank you Sooo sooo much to the CCCP's. Bevan and Val were here for a day and of course it was a day that Melissa and Darren had to go for an appointment (baby stuff). Were we ever busy!! We wish that it was a different day, because we could not spend as much time with them as we would have liked. I was able to take them on a short walk on the trails (this is when I realized that I had to mow or you could not find the trails) I had not been down the trails for almost two months and was surprised at how overgrown they were becoming. On the logging road, we were walking with a bear biologist and she was quite informative and I learnt a few things that I did not already know. We came across what we believe to be wolf scat and Doug has mentioned that we have timber wolves here now. We do not know how big the pack is but they were heard one night (along with a bunch of kids imitating them).

There is a cougar over at Mike's but so far has not tried to venture over here. Doug saw it once, but he chased it away. Doug has a little puppy now for Racer to train. We do not have anything here that would interest a cougar. Mike and Linda have chickens and a few other critters, so it is tempting for the cat. We have not seen many bears lately, but I surmise that they are coming out at night as the days have been quite hot lately.

We ran out of water as we had not had rain since the beginning of July. George tried to pump from the creek, but it was low so he moved the pipe to the pond we found. It was just trickling into the well, so he decided to get some water from Len. Len fills his landing barge up with water and then we just pump it right into the cistern. We did find out that the cistern only holds 5000 gallons and not the 10000 that we were told. It explains why we ran out of water a few times when we thought we had quite a bit more than we did.

Our pictures are on Melissa and Darren's computer and as soon as I get them I will put some on here. I will try to post again soon when there is time. August has been very busy so far and we suspect it will remain this way.

The baby bump is getting bigger and everything is as it should be so far. We are soo looking forward to November!!

Happy Canada Day. It has been a busy 10 days. The restaurant is ready for meals. The menu is simple but delicious. Melissa is a very good cook. Baking is being done and a few boats have bought bread and sticky buns. We had quite a few boats in June which is good and the word is being passed around. Posters have been sent with one of the boats and we are getting to be known on the coast.

There were about 20 dolphins in the bay for about 5 hours the other day. They were having quite a feed and are unusual to see so close. It was low tide as well so there was not much water for them. The fish must have been hiding in the shallows to get away from them, but they kept feeding. It was quite a sight to see in our quiet bay.

We had our very first really big boat on July 1, 2009. 150 ft it was. Because the NW wind was gusting quite badly it decided not to stay overnight. It was tied up for about an hour allowing some of the people on board to browse the store and restaurant. One gentleman even bought a sticky bun to take back to the boat. We were quite excited to have this boat here and to meet the person that owned it.

We had a nice Canada Day visiting with Carl and Doug on the top deck. Melissa made a lovely chili and bisquit supper. There was one other boat tied up but they did not partake and the REALLY big yacht was not here yet.

We suspect that July will be busier. We have had quite a few requests and inquiries via e-mail. Keep them coming folks!!

It has been a busy few days. The deck on the roof is almost complete, the stairway to the deck on the roof is now complete and the restaurant now has propane connected to the stove and power for the fridge. What Excitement!!. We have had a few boats at the dock in the last week which is really nice. Bob Hale from The Waggoneer stopped in for a visit yesterday and will be updating his website with news of our adventure. The Second Love (Chris and Sharon) is moored at the dock tonight along with Lootas (Keith and Donna, fellow former Albertans). Chris has been telling everyone he knows about our new venture and he is quite excited for us.

Dave and Merle (Ocean Child) have been helping us on the dock and in the yard. Their help is greatly appreciated. The weather has been wonderful, the garden is growing and we even had radishes tonight. We did not get any radishes last year, just radish seed. The hummingbirds are still aflitter and the odd bear has been seen across the estuary. We are looking forward to a nice summer, which starts tomorrow.

It has been a busy couple of weeks. We have had a few boats at the dock and a few that have visited. The weather has been nice and we finally had rain yesterday and last night. It was getting quite dry and the garden and flowers were starting to suffer. George had seen a few deer which is nice and we have sighted some black bears across the estuary.

WE ARE NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS. Hurray!! Even though we still do not have coolers for fresh produce, we have dry goods and hardware items. The docks are in place and the walkway to shore is secure. Life could not get any better, so they say. George has a clean bill of health and I am missing two wisdom teeth. (I still have some wisdom left however, with one tooth remaining). Melissa and Darren are getting ready to open. Their fridge, stove and oven were lifted onto the top floor this morning. Just have to hook up the propane and power and Sticky buns for everyone. Doug has been especially patient for sticky buns. Dave and Merle have been keeping themselves busy. Dave finished the walkway to the ramp and Merle has been keeping the yard up to snuff.

It has been really hot the last week which is very welcome. The spring so far had been cold and windy and we thought we would have a repeat of last year. The garden is even growing this year and has only been planted for a week and a half. Even the hummingbirds think it is going to be a good summer. There are dozens around the 5 feeders that are out.

We have had boats tied up to the dock and neighbors have been shopping in the store. We are hoping for a busy summer.

What to say. George's surgery went well. It was a little more extensive than previously thought but all is okay. George came home on April 24 and I was glad to see him. It was a very long week and a half that he was gone. I did not get much done as it was cold and windy. I did get some of the pricing done and the shelving finished.

Melissa and Darren came on the 26th of April and have been busy ever since. They put the store together for me by stocking the shelves and finishing the pricing. They did a very good job as they both had a very good eye at to where items should go.

On April 29 to May 2 the pile driver was here and we have piles. So exciting to be able to accommodate boats. The store is basically open, we are still sourcing out product but will have most by the end of the month. Melissa and Darren have been busy painting and fixing the upstairs to get it ready for the bakery/pub/restaurant.

Flowers are blooming and the hummingbirds are a-humming. The grass needs mowing badly, hopefully the new blades are in. Darn those rocks and witness pins!! They do tend to sneak up on a mower and jump out at it. There are not too many mosquitoes yet, but I believe it is because it had been quite cold. I think my rose tree has suffered from the cold as only a few leaves have emerged.

We had a visitor on the 27th. The San Souci called and wanted to tie up for the night. Because it was 120 ton and our piles were not in, we suggested that they anchor out. Ken and his wife are on their way to Japan, via Alaska. Check out his blog: http://www.kensblog.com/ .

Sooo much has gone on in the last two weeks. Terry has come and gone. Both he and George accomplished quite abit while he was here. The top deck is ready to be built and the boards have been nailed onto the 16ft dock section, wood has been split and stacked. We even took time out to go on an adventure. We took the lawn tractor, wagon and bobcat back behind the house to the creek and to find the gravel pit. The skunk cabbage was coming out by the creek which means the bears were going to be waking up soon. The trek to the gravel pit was well worth it. The road is almost clear of trees. We came across quite a few spurs going off to the left. We came across an old very large beaver pond which looks like it could be a nice swimming hole! I was excited when we saw that. The pond has been there for quite some time as the trees are all dead that are in it. Doug says that the wolves got the beavers years ago. We have not seen any evidence of recent beavers. We did not find the road to the gravel pit right away, even though we could see the pit from the top. Terry found it as it was overgrown with small trees and a bit swampy on the side, so we did not think it was the road, BUT it was. It was actually quite a beautiful mountain plateau that the gravel pit was on and a bit of a surprise.

George, Doug and I all went to Campbell River for a day as I had a dentist appointment. Doug took us to the Ideal cafe, which was quite a unique place. The food was Great!! When we all got back to Eve River after my appointment the wind was soo bad and the sea soo rough that we did not try to cross, even though Doug is a very good captain and knows what he is doing. We stayed at the Fisherbouy in Sayward. It is a very unique place as well. We were able to get home the next morning. While we were in Campbell River, George had taken the cube van and I the truck. George went to Qualicum to get our first order for the store.

Len came and brought the cube van back to the barge, where George unloaded it and it went back to Eve River the next day (which is the day Terry came in). It was a very hectic couple of days. While Terry and George were doing their thing I was still putting shelves together and trying to price the groceries. It is hard to price when the price tickets are not the right size for the gun. It went very slowly. I now have the proper tickets (even tho they are bright green, Staples did not have white) and the pricing is going quite quickly. George and I figured out how we were going to lay out the shelves and attached some to one wall.

George is in Edmonton right now and is having surgery on Friday. Part of the back of his tongue and one tonsil will be lasered out. That should take care of the cancer even though the doctor figures most was taken out with the biopsies that were done. The lesion was in-situ, which means on the surface.

While George is gone it is just me and Bear (the dog), even though the day before George left (Tuesday) we saw a big black across the estuary. The skunk cabbage is out at the head of the estuary and that is where he will be. I have my air horn just in case. Blackies do not like that!

I have been busy putting shelves together and pricing. I have also put the baseboards up on two walls so when George gets back we can attach the shelves to the wall. I have enjoyed watching the hummingbirds fighting over the feeders. They are such a comical bird to watch. One sits on the rose tree and watches two feeders until another shows up and then Bam it swoops in an chases the other one away. I have a feeder in the window this year so I can watch from inside. I don't sit outside much (especially since it is so windy) since we both quit smoking, hurray!!

I think spring has finally sprung as the tulips have started to bloom, grape hyacinths have been going strong since the middle of March and the primroses are an array of color. I love spring, which brings new birth to everything. The leaves will be sprouting any day now. Now we just need more sun and heat.

The Pile Driver will be here on April 22, 2009!!!! We are sooo excited for that. It means we will be able to offer moorage!! Dave and Merle will be helping us this summer which is also exciting. It has turned out to be a good year so far, especially since it did not start out so well.

It has been a very busy time on the island. Our daughter Melissa and her husband Darren were here during reading week to help get the top of the barge ready. They will be running a small bakery and grill/pub. It was quite a workout stripping all the walls etc from the top of the barge. Melissa stayed an extra week and helped put the new floor in. I rode home with her to Edmonton to keep her company.

Everything has been ripped out and only the shell remains to get ready for the grill/bakery. I painted the floor of the main barge while the upstairs was being done. It was quite a job as I did not have the proper roller and the cement is quite pocked in places. It is done now and ready for stocking. I have also been putting the shelves together.

George had a doctor's appointment in Edmonton on March 23 and he is scheduled for laser surgery on April 17. The piles should be in by then as there will be a new pile driver in the area and he is quite eager to put in our piles. Yeah!! It would only be fine tuning then and we should be open for busy by the end of April.

We have been patiently waiting for spring to arrive. Old man winter just does not want to go away this year. The tulips and daffodils started to poke out in the beginning of March and the primroses were in bloom.

Some mystery flowers appeared, which I found out were Snow Drops. Very pretty flowers.

The sun does decide to poke its nose out once in awhile, and the birds and us really enjoy the warmth it has to offer. George even saw a hummingbird on Saturday, so I rushed to put out the feeders as there are no wildflowers yet. Soon the daffodils will be blooming. Hummingbirds do eat small insects and small spiders, so there is some food for them. The ground seems to be alive with robins and the geese are really trying to nest close to the house but we will not have that. They can graze along the estuary by not by the house. Geese are messy, messy birds. Tomorrow is the 1st of April and George's birthday. A cake is being made and maybe Doug will come and enjoy cake and coffee after he drops off the mail tomorrow.

Brother-in-law Terry is arriving on Sunday and will be staying for a few days. He has not been here for about a year and half and he may notice a difference. He has not seen the barge yet, so may be in for a surprise. Hope he is ready to work, as George can be a slave driver at times.

Well- the truck is done and the tests are over. We can go home now as everything is good. Can't wait to see everything. Two months is too long to be gone from home. Besides, I have to take the Christmas tree down. We are anxious to see if the primroses are starting to bloom. The daffodils will be budding out and the tulips will be poking out of the ground. We are also quite curious to see how everything survived during December as the weather was not nice. Doug had mentioned that there was about a foot of snow at one time and it got as cold as minus 8.

It will be interesting to see what the spring has to offer, especially since there are no cows to contend with. What scavengers these funny looking creatures were. Scottish Highlanders tend to eat everything in site, even rope. We are quite curious to see what else the land has to offer now that it is not being eaten down to the ground.

We will miss all our family and friends but know that we have lots of exciting things happening in the spring. Darren and Melissa will be home shortly - by the end of the week, and lots will be done. Shelves and tables were picked up at Ikea along with a commercial convention oven. How everyone will enjoy the home baked bread. Yum.

What to say! It has been quite a journey this last month. After being broadsided in the IGA parking lot on Dec 23 we still to not have our truck back. (it is supposed to be done tomorrow, inshahala). Young people should slow down and pay attention when driving on ice!

George has been undergoing medical tests . The last one is on the 5th and we should be able to go home after that. Doug is taking care of everything for us while we are gone and he is such a wonderful friend. George talks to him about twice a week and Doug has been informing us of the weather and things going on. We miss him and being home, especially during the minus 40 weather that Peace River was receiving for quite some time. TALK ABOUT COLD!!

While in Peace River, we have enjoyed visiting with family and friends. We were able to see Kory and Samantha and the kids as well as Chelsea, Clint and baby Cael. We are enjoying the Jets hockey, as George used to coach the team and Ryan plays for them. This is something we both miss at home. I would say we are Ryan's biggest fans! George has re-aquainted with old friends Harold, Bob and John. He goes for coffee and enjoys their friendship. George has also been enjoying his "breakfast" out, usually a MacDonald's breakfast burrito but sometimes with Gary at Smitty's.

Reading week will be quite eventful for us as the kids are coming to help get the top of the barge ready for the pub/restaurant. Since Melissa and Darren are going to be running the pub/restaurant they decided to help get it ready. They were quite helpful in getting the main barge gutted. We are soo looking forward to them being home with us. What do we call the pub/restaurant? Any suggestions?

Quite a bit has to be done in order to be open for business in May. The floor is ready for painting and we will be purchasing shelving at Ikea. We had hoped to have the floor painted before we left for Christmas but the weather did not cooperate. Our order is ready to be sent for the groceries and we just have to order the hardware and gift items.

We should have a pile driver available when we get home. Yee Ha - a busy time getting the docks in place. What excitement!! The weather will be wonderful as well. We Can't Wait!!

Christmas was a wonderful time spent with family and friends in Peace River, Alberta. The New Year promises to be quite exciting with many things happening on the dock, etc. We hope to be open in May and anticipate a busy summer.

Wind, Wind go away. It has been rainy and windy for the last two weeks. We did have a couple of days that were sunny, but they were still windy which made it cold. I guess winter is officially here!! George and I went to Campbell River on the 28 and came back on the 29th. It was an uneventful crossing even though we got back just before dark.

George has been working on the barge and pumping water to the cistern. The well is overflowing, and our cistern is now full, along with the spare tank behind the generator shed. We have had to start the propane heater in our bedroom as it is quite chilly these days. Can't wait for the furnace that we want to buy. It will make it soo much warmer and also save on propane.

There is a wind warning out today, with winds gusting up to 50 knots which is 92 kmh. Now that is STRONG. Yesterday we went on the mail run with Doug again and had a very nice visit with Jenny at the Post Office. We stopped at Len's to look at some piles that he has. Now we only have to get a pile driver.

I have been trying to get the potatoes and carrots out of the garden, but the weather is not cooperating. We do however still have flowers growing in the flower beds.

What an exciting time we have had!! George and I have been busy working on parts of the barge and getting the yard sorted out. The garden is basically finished and I was quite disappointed with the turn out. Some plants just did not grow! They were the same size as when I planted them. The poppies are still blooming in the flower beds and some of the other glads started to bloom. Next year it will be different! Better soil is to be had.

We had several visitors in October. On October 7 and 8 the Coastal Messenger stopped in for a visit. This is a missionary boat that visits the coast all year. Port Harvey and area is on their schedule for October 7 to 10. They arrived early to Port Harvey because there was a wind warning out and Bing and Eleanor at Hadley Bay were out fishing. They tied to our dock to be secure. They came for coffee and later that day George and I went to their boat for supper. A very nice one indeed. Roy and crew, Petunia, Gloria and Tom were excellent company and we thoroughly enjoyed their visit. Later that night, true to form the wind did pick up. I had never heard such a wind before. Around 4 am the wind changed direction and woke everyone up. The Coastal Messenger had gone 45 degs on the dock. The screws holding the one section of dock had pulled out and the dock was no longer secure. Roy and Tom secured the dock and the boat to the barge so all was well. This secton of dock was only temporarily attached to the other. George knew that it had to be attached better. I guess a 70 ft boat was just oo much right now for it. On the news later that day it was mentioned that the wind was stronger than predicted and had been recorded at 160 KMH on some parts of north and east Vancouver Island. Luckily for us there was no damage and the dock is still secure. Roy, Petunia, Gloria, Tom and Doug came for supper on October 8. The Coastal Messenger had moved over to Doug's dock which has pilings and is alot more secure. Fortunately, the wind stopped and the sun came out. On the 9th the Coastal Messenger went back to Hadley bay to visit Bing and Eleanor and then they were off to Port Neville to visit Lorna.

On October 10 Mother Mary, Aunt Kitty and Uncle Bob came for a visit. George and I went to Campbell River on this day to meet them and restock the pantry. We came back across the strait on Friday, Oct 11. Doug was the chauffeur across in case it was not a nice trip. Fortunately, the strait was calm and the sun was out. It was a very nice crossing. Aunt Kitty only became a little nervous when Doug decided to play with George's wake. George and Uncle Bob came across in the bayliner. Doug decided to race George and Uncle Bob and we beat them to the dock. Doug came up for coffee and visited with us girls while Uncle Bob and George unloaded the boats. The bobcat sure comes in handy when there is so much luggage and groceries!

Saturday was an exploration day and George and I enjoyed showing our family what we had accomplished in a year. Mom had not been here for two years so she especially noticed the difference. This was the first time for Uncle Bob and Aunt Kitty. We were soo fortunate that the weather was good and not too cold. "Old people" really feel the cold. We even lit the furnaces for them! Sunday was Thanksgiving dinner. Carl and Doug joined all of us for supper.
George picked out the turkey and I do not know what he was thinking, 30 lbs for 7 people is a bit much. If the turkey would have been alive, it definately would have been toast by the end of the evening. I couldn't believe that only half the bird had actually cooked! I put it back in the oven after supper to cook it some more and even after an additional 3 hours one part was STILL not cooked. Mom said I gave the turkey "The Look" and if looks could kill it would have been dead if it wasn't already. I must say the fish and crabs enjoyed that part of the turkey!!

Uncle Bob was a huge help for George and they did quite a bit on the barge. They even had us ladies down there helping. We held the beams in place while George and Uncle Bob used the mallet to pound them in place. The ceiling and roof will not fall down now!! We all helped pull the rubber up the edges of the barge as it had sagged quite a bit. That took us all morning. Aunt Kitty, mom and I went for a few walks, but basically we visited. Doug took them all on the mail run and they really enjoyed it. I am glad they were able to see how we live and how many neighbors we have. We had planned on doing a few boat trips when they were here but the wind would not cooperate and the temperature was not that warm for a boat ride. We did go on a short ride on Wednesday and showed them some of the sights, like the petroglyphs on the rock on Mist Island and how calm the strait can be. If it was earlier in the day, we could have gone further but it was getting late. Doug was the chauffeur again on Thursday, Oct 16 to take the family back across to Eve River so they could be on their way back home.
We thoroughly enjoyed their visit and it was a little lonely when they were gone. George and I were sad to hear of the passing of sister Debe and brother-in-law Gary's niece Chantal on Friday October 17. She was a courageous young lady and put up such a battle. She will be missed by all that knew her. The town of Peace River and area were huge supporters and will miss her dearly.

George and I went up the estuary in the black banana at high tide. We went up the creeks for quite a ways. Doug had mentioned to us at one time that two men used to live up at the end of the estuary, but that no one knows who they were. There is still evidence of an existence there as there are fence posts in one area and it looks like fruit trees. We will explore this area more at low tide and in the winter when the bears are asleep. Maybe our metal detector will find some "treasurers".George went with Doug to help fix Jenny's truck. She had carborator problems. George took the fuel pump and the carborator off the Mellow Yellow but they did not fit. Doug and George were able to fix the problem anyway and Jenny has a truck to use.

Yesterday, Dave and Merle stopped in for coffee and stayed for supper. Doug came over also. Dave and Merle worked at Lagoon Cove for the last year and looked after the marina during the fall and winter. They decided to leave but stayed in the area helping Bing and Eleanor for awhile. Now they are off to Thetis Island for the winter and will be back up here next spring. They are a lovely couple and very knowledgeable. Dave was the resident "dentist" and could also be the doctor if need be. We will definately welcome them back next spring. Their boat "Ocean Child" is moored in the bay and they hope to leave today if the wind cooperates. Right now it is not and there is a wind warning out. If the wind switches to the northwest, they will leave and sail their way through the strait.

The little black butter ball is still around and we are glad to see him. He was a cub that was too young to be away from momma and was all alone. Doug and us have been keeping track of him since this spring and we were afraid that he would not make it to winter but alas he is rolly-polly and healthy with a shiny coat. He has been hanging around the property between Doug's and us and we believe that he feels safer here as bigger bears and other animals do not come around "human property".

We hope to go to Campbell River tomorrow (depending on the wind) to stock up on some items and pick up the spindle for the lawn tractor. MAYBE I can get the lawn mowed before winter. We plan on going back to Alberta for a month again at Christmas and both George and I are looking forward to watching the Valleyview Jets hockey. George does miss being involved with his "boys".

Where to begin!! I am back from Alberta after being gone a month which I did not expect to be gone that long! Christine's knee surgery went well and she is now in Edmonton with Melissa and Darren. She is progressing nicely. We had found a physiotherapy clinic only 1.5 blocks away from where she lives now. George and the boys fended well on their own and accomplished quite a bit. The docks pieces are done and awaiting installation. We still do not have piles and are just awaiting the pile driver still!! Who knows when it will come. This is life on the coast we have been told.

George took the boys fishing one nice sunny day. A few dog fish were caught and enjoyable time was had by all three. They did see some whales and bears.

Alex and Kelly left before the end of August. Before the boys left, they tried to bring the barge onto the rubber that was laid out on the flat. They were able to do it, but the rubber folded and the barge was not level so was starting to creak!!. It was moved off the next day. After the boys left, George moved the rubber to a different spot on the beach. He moved the barge onto the rubber and fastened one end to the barge. He then proceeded to tow the barge around the bay so the rubber would flow underneath the barge. After a couple of passes around the bay he was able to get the rubber to flow flat under the barge. Doug came over a few days later and helped George fasten the other end of the rubber to the barge.

I arrived back here on the 8th of September. Talk about mosquitoes!! The garlic oil that George sprayed in May had worn off and with the damp the mosquitoes return with a venegence. The 2 skeeter vacs that we have are working overtime. The mosquitoes are dissipating but slowly.

The corn in the garden is going to be quite nice. It is still developing. The carrots are getting big, the lettuce went to seed, the parsnips are growing and the potatoes are maturing. The lone pumpkin has lots of flowers but no pumpkins. The tomatoes are producing nicely. Only got 2 little cucumbers because the plants never grew and the cabbage is wormy. We will be adding soil and fertilizer for next year.

The black raspberries are ripening and I have picked some and froze them. I will be going over to Doug's to pick his. I am trying to get enough to make jam. (Doug says they make good jam, hint, hint).
George is busy fastening the rubber to the sides of the barge now. We have decided that we will not be open this year. This way we can concentrate on doing things properly. There is still quite a bit of work to do before we open.

The poppies are still blooming in the flower bed and I missed most of the glads. George says they were lovely. There are still roses on the rose vine!

Yesterday, Sept 19 Doug took George and I to Port Neville to meet Lorna.
Port Neville is a historic site. The old store has been made into a gift shop/art gallery/museum. It is quite interesting. Lorna was raised in Port Neville and still lives there.
We also met Dave who lives across the bay from Lorna. His wife Peggy used to be a vet and is also an artist. It is her paintings that are in the art gallery. We really enjoyed our visit with both Lorna and Dave. It is always nice to meet people who live on the coast and to find out the history of the area.
Doug took us on a tour of the inlet and gave us a history of it. We were hoping to see grizzly bears but none were around. Port Neville is on the mainland and is only a short distance from Glendale Cove in Knights Inlet. Glendale Cove is known for Grizzly bears. We spent all day with Doug exploring the coast and learning the history. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The mower on the lawn tractor is still broken, so I have been trying to mow the lawn with the push mower. It is quite slow going as the clover has gotten quite high and chokes out the mower. George's mother, aunt and uncle will be here in October and we want the place to look nice for them. Mowing the grass/weeds/clover will keep the mosquitoes at bay as well ( I hope).

It is quite foggy in the mornings and at times you can hear the lonely toot of a fog horn in Johnstone Strait. The weather is still nice with the sun shining almost everyday! I think we finally have summer!! Let's hope it stays this way until after Mary, Kitty and Bob leave. We have a few things planned but they depend on nice weather.

A few things have been happening in the last couple of days.
The new dock sections are being completed and Christine is busy working on the walkway railings. She has done most of these railings by herself. Here is her and Kelly cutting wood for the walkways.

We saw our first Lion's Mane Jellyfish the other day. These are quite huge with tentacles up to 6o ft long. DO NOT TOUCH, as their sting is deadly.

Christine and I will be leaving on Friday to go back to Alberta to help Melissa move and for Christine's operation. George and the boys will have to fend for themselves for awhile! It should be interesting!

Breakfast is always interesting for the kids. One day it is "heart stopper"buns and the next day it can be pancakes. Today George made a creation of pancakes, ham and eggs all in one. Puts meat on the bones!!

Have not seen any more bears. We think they have moved on. The hummingbirds are still around for awhile, but most of the robins are gone. Soon we will be getting the birds from the north as alot of birds winter here.

Again the time has gone fast!! Much has been done in the last two weeks. The docks have been moved from beside the estuary to beside the existing dock.

Kelly and Christine rode the dock while Alex pulled it with the Black Banana (20 ft Zodiac we bought at an auction, good investment). The dock sections were secured on the beach out front.
The barge itself is getting a good facelift on the outside. One side is completely done.

The kids have been having fun. Kelly and Christine swam in the estuary on a really hot day and Kelly decided to dive off the walkway during high tide.

Our prawn catching is doing not too bad, if we can keep the starfish out of the trap and if we can also keep our traps. We have a tendency to lose the trap. 3 so far this year! We have had several prawn curries so far as when we catch the prawns, they are partially cooked and froze. When there is enough for a good feed, away we go. Good eats!!

All three have gone fishing and Kelly has been really excited about some of the fish that he has caught. The ratfish was especially interesting. Alex caught a 20 lb 4ft ling cod just the other day and we had a good feed. We still have a filet in the freezer for next time.The head of the cod went into the crab trap so hopefully we can have a feed of crab. Not bad fixin's for being just in front of the dock.

Marine Link came in on the 31st with a few lifts of lumber. The kids were quite excited. It was the first time that Alex and Kelly had seen a landing craft delivering supplies. Marine Link does charters for tourists and the boys were quite chatty with them. The charter is a way for tourists to see the working coast and how people live on the coast.

We all went to Kate and Joel's for a weiner roast last night. A good time was had by all. Today is a day off for the kids and they are catching up on some much needed sleep!!

We went to town last Monday/Tuesday and when we returned the boys had to go get the dock pieces. They were in several places around the bay. Luckily they were all found and none the worse for wear! George has to give the boys a good lesson in knot tying!!

Christine and I will be going back to Alberta on Friday, Aug 8 as she has an operation on her knee on the 19th and we are also helping our daughter Melissa move to Edmonton.

Hopefully the garden is still okay when I return. The squirrels are eating the peas and the earwigs like the head lettuce.

Where has the time gone? Can't believe that it has been almost a month since the last post. Have to get on this a little sooner. Much, much has been going on. The barge/store's facelift is almost complete. The dock/walkway is progressing.

We have had a few visitors to the dock and a few checking out if the store is open.

We hope to be open in the next couple of weeks. Piles are not going to happen just yet, but George has figured out an anchoring system. Four 45 gallon drums have been filled with cement and two of these "anchors" have been put in place by the Sea Roamer. They are strong enough that when the Sea Roamer tied up to them, it could not move. This should suffice until we can get the piles. The pile driver has hydraulic problems and they do not know when it will be fixed. Fortunately, it is across the bay from us as it is being fixed.

I have discovered some of the mystery flowers growing in our flower bed.
They are lettuce leaf poppies and are very beautiful. They are popping up all over the flower beds. The climbing rose bush is full of roses and the garden is starting to thrive. The soil in the garden is very poor and next year we have to look at either hauling dirt from beside the well, or bringing in bags of top soil.

The wind has not stopped for about a month and we are getting quite tired of it. Luckily the sun has decided to make an appearance for the last week. It has not rained significantly for about a month and consequently we are getting low on water. George and the boys have strung out a pipe to the back creek, but so far we are short and need to get more pipe. Our well is a hand dug well and fills with ground water. George then pumps to a cistern (which we have been told is 10 thousand gallons, we have our doubts). Because of the dry summer so far the well is not filling up very much and water conservation has started as a result. This means washing dishes only once a day and not using the dishwasher. Flushing of toilets only happens when needed (or if it has sat too long). Showers are at a minimum. With this conservation, we should be back to normal soon with a full cistern. Conservation still has to happen but when the cistern is more full, showers, laundry and the dishwasher can be done more often.

Our daughter Christine is here now. She came on July 14 and has been a big help. She makes lunch everyday and at the moment she is putting the railing on the walkway. The boys have cleaned out the floathouse and have moved in. I guess it is quite cozy. They have one lamp and a TV/DVD combo. It is their little place!

There have not been as many bears around as there was before. They have obviously moved on.

We did have a visitor in the yard the other day and gave Christine a little bit of a fright. It was a deer and she was only about 4 feet away from it before she saw it. I saw a doe and two fawns across the estuary the same day. I hope they come over here. Since the cows are gone, there is more food for the deer.

The cube van has finally been unloaded of the rest of our things. The loft is quite full now, but at least now we can start to put some of it away. Yeh I have my sewing machine now. The van is now across at Eve River. The Sea Roamer took it across the other day. We will use the van to haul our stock for the store and then it is off to Calgary, so Melissa and Darren can use it to move to Edmonton in August.

The mowing of the lawn/grass/weeds has been put on a standstill as I broke the push mower by hitting a piece of steel and the tractor has issues as well. George will take the deck off the tractor and see if he can figure out what is wrong. The bobcat is sick as well, and we are waiting for a new starter for it. When it was stuck on the beach, the starter must have got some salt water in it and it is corroded. Christine and Kelly were digging for the fork for the bobcat but so far it has not been found. I am athinking that it may be in China! Need that fork! The lifts of lumber at the front by the beach is becoming unsightly!

Kate and Joel are back for the summer. They have a cabin on one of the small islets in the bay. They have been busy building a new cabin, with logs that Joel has cut himshelf. It is quite nice and I look forward to seeing it complete. We had them for supper one day and Kate was the one that told me I had poppies growing. The boys helped them one day to help unload their cube van. They are a lovely couple and we hope to spend more time with them.

John and Nancy arrived last week and came for a visit the other day. They are such nice people, as well. They have a few stories to tell of the bay as well. They have a potluck supper every year around August 17 (Joel's birthday). George's mom Mary will be here this year for it. The potluck has people from all over - Burial Cove, Soderman Cove, Chatham Channel, Lagoon Cove etc. Of course the people from Port Harvey are their as well. What a wonderful time is had by all. We really look forward to this year!

Two weeks have passed and much has happened in the Bay. I had to leave for four days for family business and when I returned WHAT a difference. On June 18, George picked up two young lads, one from Nova Scotia (Alex "Wharf Rat") and one from Manitoba (Kelly "Prawn Bait"). They have been working hard, learning construction and renovation. The barge/store is really coming along now. The windows are in and one of the new doors, as well as the ranch board on the outside on one side. The inside is being cleaned up and George and the boys are busy getting the inside sheeted with OSB. These two boys have been really helpful and are very energetic. They both were involved with Katimavik this past year. This is a group of people who basically volunteer in different communities for 3 months at a time. They are fed and housed and given a token pay (not very much). It is a life experience for them. We met Alex and Kelly through our daughter Christine, who worked with Alex at the daycare in Peace River, when the group was in Peace River.

Many critters have appeared in the yard as of late. We had several black bears at different times. We watch them come across the estuary and basically wait as we know they will come into the yard. They like our grass out back. There was a small one (probably just kicked out of the den by momma), who wondered in from the cistern area out front. He was soo cute! but it was still a bear. We forgot to get a picture of him before we chased it away. We do not believe that he will back for some time. We really scared him as he really jumped!

Yesterday, a bigger blacky (George figures 4 or 5 years) came up from the well area towards the front. We watched him for awhile. We called our dog (Bear) to have her chase it away. She came to the front deck, looked at us and went back under the backdeck. I guess she did not see or smell the bear. Some watch dog!! We scared this one away as well. Our neighbor, Doug (who turned 76 on June 13) tells us that the black bears are easy to train. He says they make good neighbors. The grizzly on the other hand is a different story he says! Doug is a wealth of information about the history of the area and we enjoy his company immensely. We have him over for supper quite often, when he is not busy running errands and getting the mail for everyone.

Last night there was a doe in the yard. I watched her come across the estuary and she was in the back yard. She was sure eyeing up my garden!!. George hurry up and finish that fence already! She saw me and decided not to linger. She went to go down the beach by the estuary, but when she got only a little distance she really jumped and decided to walk in the water to the point. Later in the evening we saw her in the front yard and she was eyeing up my glads. We just talked to her and she decided to leave. She just sauntered away towards the well.

The weather has been so-so. It rained all day yesterday but the next week is supposed to be quite nice and hot. We need the heat for the garden and flowers. Everything is a little stunted right now as the spring has been too cold.

Must go and mow the lawn now. It is a never ending chore but I really enjoy it and find it quite relaxing.

Not much has happened in the bay this last week. The weather has not been conducive to alot of outside work. Some things were done however, more cement work was done for the new dock and the wood from stripping the inside of the barge was burned. Boats have been anchoring out in the bay and we are anxiously awaiting our piles so our dock is open. The wind has prevented us from doing too much on the barge as with the window openings being cut, it is quite breezy inside.

The other day I was talking to a friend on the phone at about 8:00 in the morning. I had noticed something on the other side of the boathouse/shed. At first I thought it was our dog Bear but in fact it was a real bear. I had to put the phone down and I tried to use the airhorn, but of course it did not work at first. When it did work, the bear was in the rose bushes beside the floathouse at the back. Boy did it jump. The back of the bear came up to the hood of the Mellow Yellow (a very old toyota truck). This big boy is seen quite a bit now on the other side of the estuary grazing in the grass and overturning rocks.

That same night, as we were waiting for supper to finish cooking, I looked out the patio doors and another bear was seen. It was a small two year old. He came out of the bush from the cistern. He looked a little scared as he is trying to find his place in life. He was really cute. George scared it off. Did the little guy ever jump!! I don't think he will be around here much more. Too bad we did not take a picture of him.

It has been really windy as of late with wind warnings for the last two days. It has been one of the coldest springs on the BC coast, so the news mentions.

We were able to finally retrieve the Mellow Yellow and the Shirley Bear (boat) off the beach. They had been sitting on the beach for almost a year. Last summer, the clutch had gone out in the Mellow Yellow as we were bringing the Shirley Bear out of the water for maintenance. At first we tried to pull them with the bobcat. This did not work as the breaks are also stuck on the Mellow Yellow. George, being the ingenious person that he is, decided to use the bucket of the bobcat as a lever and this way the wayward truck and boat were pulled off the beach. They were on quite an incline so George pushed the bucket of the bobcat in the ground for leverage. IT WORKED. Now maintenance can be done on the Shirley Bear.

We have still not been able to move the barge onto its diaper on the flat. The high tides are not high enough now and when they were the wind was too strong. Such is life on the bay!

The garden is growing quite well and so are the flowers. The Lupines are blooming on the edge of the trees and I am anxiously waiting for the foxgloves to bloom. Wild Columbines and Canada Poppies are also blooming under and around the deck.
There are still mystery flowers in the flower beds. The beds were dug up last year after many years of neglect. Weeds and grass were the only things growing then. Last year I tried to plant flowers but of course the neighbor's cows ate them. The cows are no longer a problem, so many different flowers are growing that have been dormant for years. It will be interesting to see what they are. Some of the mystery flowers that had bloomed were: grape hyacinth, mountain bells, lily of the valley. The buttercups are blooming in the trees and all around and the yarrow is starting to bloom as well. The salmon berries are ripening, the black raspberries are blooming, the salal is blooming. It will be nice to make jam again. Wild crabapples are also blooming on the point and the apple tree out front has buds.

The Inlet Navigator II delivered propane and much needed gas and diesel this weekend. Marine Link had delivered lumber two weeks ago. Now with having a bobcat, the piles of lumber can be moved once the fork is found. One of the forks had come off the bobcat when it was stuck on the beach. We have to borrow a metal detector in order to find it. One fork will not do the trick I am afraid!

The Mellow Yellow and the Shirley Bear were named by the former owner of the property. Instead of Cracroft, the island was Bearcroft.

We are patiently awaiting the sun, which is supposed to show up sometime today.

Quite a bit has been happening on the barge/store this last week. The garbage from tearing down walls, etc has been cleaned up and is in the process of being burnt in the firepit. We tried to burn on the beach at low tide but the tide would come up before it was finished. (Hence the bobcat incident from last week, trying to retrieve wood that was floating.) Window frames have been built on the barge/store and more cement has been pored for the walkway/dock. The diaper (rubber) for the bottom of the barge was laid out on the flat in front and it is a waiting game now for the wind and tide.

We took our nephew Ryan to Comox yesterday as he had a 2:00 pm flight. We are again empty-nesters. Supplies were purchased and we came back across the straight yesterday evening. Not a very pleasant ride to say the least. Gail did not like it one bit.

Today has been a lazy day. I scared a baby mink on the dock today. Bear (our dog) chased it up the dock and I was on the Barge. The mink came inside but did not see me. Did it ever jump when it did.

Gail planted more bedding plants today and at one point made a bee-line for the deck as Bear was barking up a storm. Her namesake was in the bush beside the cistern. She chased it away and Gail saw it about an hour later going across the estuary towards the midden. It is a small bear and very scrawny and probably has been kicked out of the den for the first time and is still trying to find its place. Gail watched it across the estuary until it ran out of beach. It was heading south and not at a slow pace. It's mom is still in that area somewhere and it is not welcome anymore.

It has been overcast today and a little cold at times. We are waiting for the wind to die down as we need to move the barge onto the flat so we can put the diaper (rubber) on the bottom of it. It has to be done at the super high tide which happens twice a month on full moon and new moon. Tonight/early morning is the last of the 16.4 ft tides (until full moon) but the wind is not cooperating. We may have to wait for another day.

New blades have been put on the lawn mower and Gail can continue mowing-this time with a full cut and not 1/3. She broke one of the blades in half about a month ago. The Skeeter Vac has been working wonderfully in capturing the pesky mosquito. There are two Skeeter Vac's now and we hope to purchase another one this month. Mosquitoes are horrendous on this island unless you get control of them. They do not so much bite but are a very huge pest as they swarm all around you. Even had to get repellent for Bear as she was always being bothered by them. Keeping the grass cut helps in controlling them and we will be trying a new product soon. It is garlic oil and mosquitoes and other insects do not like it. It will also keep the geese away as the grass is bitter and they do not like it.

Tomorrow is another day on the bay, hopefully the weather is good.

It has been a very busy week on the bay. On Wednesday Gail and I along with our daughter Melissa and husband Darren travelled by our 19 ft bayliner (ski boat-open bow) up the west side of Cracroft Island via Johnstone Strait to Telegraph Cove, Port McNeil and Alert Bay. It was a little bumpy at first but by the time we arrived in Telegraph Cove the water calmed out and the sun came out. What a beautiful place with a boardwalk around the marina and antique buildings. After a coffee from a very nice coffee house, we proceeded to Port McNeil. There we had lunch at McNeil's which was very good. We strolled around Port McNeil for awhile and then travelled to Alert Bay on Cormorant Island. This is a Native Village with a very nice cultural centre. The video in the Cultural Center is a must see. It explains the potlatch and the masks used during the potlatch. Oprah Winfrey visited this island last year. On the way home we boated up Baronet Passage and Clio Channel to Lagoon Cove, we got fuel there and chatted with the caretakers of this lovely Marina. On through the Blow Hole and down Chatham Channel. Almost home now. Through Havannah Channel and then we are home. What a lovely day we had.

Saturday was another successful work day where Gail, myself, Melissa, Darren and Ryan went up the old logging road to put a hose in the creek. Quite a hike but well worth it. A never ending supply of fresh water! Thank goodness for the bobcat to clear the way. It was interesting to see the old culverts made of cedar. Next fall we will have to find the old camp that is back there. Fall and winter are a better time of year to explore the bush as the undergrowth is gone and the bears are sleeping.

Work on the walkway for the new dock is progressing. We are now on the rocks at the point and can walk right onto the grass on the point. The barge has been completely gutted to get ready for the new store. Windows will be going in and preparation has started for framing the inside. What a job!!. Our thanks to Darren and Melissa for doing such a good job. Very dirty work to say the least. All the mess is cleaned up now thanks to our nephew Ryan.

He DID manage to get the bobcat stuck on the beach however. WHAT excitement that caused. Racing around the bay the find the captain of the Sea Roamer so they could come an pull out the bobcat with their crane. Tide is coming in, tide is coming in, hurry race around the bay to find the captain. Finally the captain is found and the bobcat getting pulled out of the mucky soup . Buried up to the door! Luckily nothing got wet in the motor and the air cleaner was dry. Could have been a very expensive repair job.

Sunday I saw a black bear put a run on the small grizzly that is across from us in the estuary. What a sight to see - the grizzly running and panting through the water with momma black bear on his heels. Not time to stop and rest, she keeps coming. Wednesday the Grizzly is back. I hope it stays across on the estuary and not decide to come over here.

On Friday morning Gail saw the grizzly come across the water in the estuary to this side of the island. We do not know if it was coming this way or decided to go up to the creek. Lets hope the latter.

The very high tide is coming soon so the barge will be moved to its permanent location and work can begin on preparing the dock for moorage and the store for supplies.

This is where we live. Wood and timbers used to build this house came from the cannery in Bones Bay on Cracroft Island in the 1980's. It has modern amenities such as flush toilets and running water, and even came with a bidet (although it is coming out rather quickly!). We have been living here full time for 6 months now, although the property has been our project since October 2005. We are currently in the process of setting up a marina and store so that no one ever runs out of beans again! Follow us as we stumble along this road to semi-retirement, boating, and building, posting plenty of pictures along the way.
